Hemifacial Microsomia Care

Dr. Chad Purnell evaluates children and adults with hemifacial microsomia, also called craniofacial microsomia, in Chicago. Patients from across the country are welcome.

Craniofacial microsomia involves underdevelopment of facial structures, often including the jaw and ear. Differences may also affect the cheeks, eyes, facial soft tissues or facial movement. One side of the face may look different from the other, and the teeth may not fit together evenly. The pattern varies widely.

Planning begins with a detailed assessment of facial structure, jaw function, bite and the patient’s priorities. Dr. Purnell discusses whether observation, coordinated orthodontic care or reconstructive surgery may be appropriate. The treatment plan depends on the specific anatomy, age and previous care.

Adults may seek evaluation for facial asymmetry, jaw alignment or concerns that remain after earlier treatment. Dr. Purnell’s research interests include craniofacial microsomia and patient-reported quality of life, reflecting attention to outcomes that matter to patients.

Use Get In Touch above to arrange an evaluation. Ask the office which prior imaging, surgical reports or orthodontic records to provide before traveling. Educational reference: Seattle Children’s, Craniofacial Microsomia.
