Apert Syndrome Care
Dr. Chad Purnell provides craniofacial care for children and adults with Apert syndrome in Chicago, welcoming patients and families from across the country.
Apert syndrome affects the development of the skull, face, hands and feet. Early fusion of skull bones, called craniosynostosis, can affect head shape and facial growth. The middle of the face and upper jaw may be underdeveloped, and fingers or toes may be joined. Each person has a different combination of needs.
Craniofacial treatment considers function as well as appearance. Evaluation may involve skull growth, facial proportions, jaw alignment, breathing and previous operations. Dr. Purnell works with a multidisciplinary team to discuss an individualized plan; timing and procedures depend on the patient.
Care does not necessarily end after pediatric treatment. Adults with Apert syndrome are welcome to discuss remaining concerns, changes over time or options after earlier reconstruction. Bring prior operative reports and imaging when available.
