Jaw (orthognathic) surgery

Jaw surgery can be helpful if a child or adult’s teeth do not line up correctly, such as an underbite or overbite.  This can occur because of jaw growth issues, cleft palate, or craniofacial abnormalities. Often, an orthodontist can help identify patients who will need jaw surgery to help re-align their teeth for an improved bite.  Jaw surgery may have many benefits, including functional improvement of chewing and biting, breathing improvements, and improved facial appearance. 

 

Planning for jaw surgery is a combined effort by your orthodontist and surgeon.  Dr. Purnell is happy to work with your own orthodontist if you would prefer.  We also work with many orthodontists and can recommend one if you desire. Prior to many jaw surgeries, you may need wisdom teeth extracted and we can perform this as well.
